Google Maps Steet View - could be the next widely used tool for selling real estate

Google recently launched a street view on Google Maps. This allows you to zoom in on the actual street and see what the street and surrounding houses look like. How cool is that? I know most buyers look at the street, surrounding houses and condition of the neighborhood when deciding if a house is right for them. This will allow buyers to do just that without ever stepping foot on the street. Google currently only supports some cities so I don't see this being widely used until more areas are supported but as they do add more cities I can see this being a valuable tool in real estate.

Check to see if your street is available and get widget code for your blog
1. Go to Google maps http://maps.google.com/
2. Type in your location and click search maps
3. Click the "Street View" tab on the Google map
4. All available street view locations will have blue bordering. Click on any street with blue bordering.
5. Get the widget code by clicking the "Link to this page" and use the "Paste HTML to embed in website" snippet to paste into your blog or website.

See http://googlemapsapi.blogspot.com/2008/03/street-view-in-api-or-how-i-spent-my.html for more details. See the following for a street view on a San Francisco, CA street.

Look at Me, I'm as Helpless as a Kitten in a Tree . . .

(Sorry Misty, before your time!)

This is ULTRA-COOL and ULTRA-HELPFUL TECHNOLOGY.  Sometimes, however, it is a bit off - especially when looking up smaller residential streets at the house level.  Tried it once, and some dive bar came up.  Several other times - it's right on, and can show positives as well as the negatives of a specific, precisely-defined location.

It could work, or sometimes make for a good laugh - but, when it's perfected, it will be AWESOME!

Happy April Fools Day!

Dave -happy to hear you are learning from this blog

Dean - Yes I noticed in some cases it is off and many locations are still not available.  A dive bar in place of a house?  Yikes!  That would drive away buyers.  It has a ways to go before it can be used in production but I agree that when it is perfected, it will be very valuable. I couldn't resist to Google Look at Me, I'm as Helpless as a Kitten in a Tree to see what you were talking about.  Yeah, a bit before my time :)

Sometimes that can be a good idea and sometimes it may not be good idea depending on what is around your street.

This street view at google has been spreading like wildfire!  I guess there's no more "hiding" the fact the a home is right next to a junk yard anymore!

Thanks Gene for your feedback. I suppose it would be a bad idea for the seller if they had something bad around their street but it sure is great for the buyer.

Tony- yes, when this is more widely available in more cities it is going to be tough to hide anything in your surrounding neighborhood.

Misty, great post. I'd forgotten about the option for the street view......adding a widget of the street views is even a better idea. Thanks for sharing,

Pepper

Hi Misty ~~ Yes, it certainly can be useful.  Let's hope that Google will update their pictures periodically, too.
